Scientific name: Ara ararauna
When it comes to illegal wildlife trade, this beautiful bird is one of the most popular species. Its natural habitat is the forest and woodland of tropical South America. The blue-and-yellow macaws can reach 76–86 cm long and weigh up to 1.5 kg, making them some of the larger members of their family.
They use their powerful beaks for breaking nutshells, and for navigating and hanging from trees.
Our Scarlet Macaw “Rojo” was in a very poor condition and traumatized when he came to the Foundation. He received physical therapy in order to learn how to climb and sit on a tree. He will never be able to fly again, but today he can live, walk and climb and has a happy home with a companion.
